PENGUIN- MONICA ALI'S BRICK LANE
Context
Brick Lane by Monica Ali is a novel that explores the life of Nazneen, a Bangladeshi immigrant in London, as she navigates the clash between her traditional South Asian background and the modern, westernized British environment of Brick Lane. The book delves into themes of cultural identity, family, and the immigrant experience, making it a pivotal narrative about the intersection of Eastern and Western values.
ART DIRECTION
For the cover redesign, I creatively experimented with a blend of handcrafted elements and digital software to develop fabric typography. This approach symbolized the cultural clash between South Asian traditions and the Western British setting, which is central to the story. The fabric textures were chosen to represent the merging and tension of these two worlds. The final cover art, which was delivered ready for publishing, has been showcased on major book retailer sites such as Waterstones, Blackwell’s, and AbeBooks.
