CARIB EATS | MORE THAN A MEAL
CONTEXT
Founded by Ali Kakande at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Carib Eats began with a simple WhatsApp message—a plea for help from someone experiencing food poverty. What started as a small act of kindness has since grown into a movement that bridges generations, connects communities through food, and celebrates culture with music and conversation. Now, with a residency at Islington’s Black Cultural Centre, Carib Eats continues to expand its impact, launching with a celebratory event on February 12th.
storytelling
My role in this project centered around capturing the essence of Carib Eats through mobile videography and video editing, with the goal of telling a story that extends beyond food. This short film serves as a testament to the organisation’s mission and impact, spotlighting the real people it serves. Through interviews, event coverage, and personal narratives, I documented the experiences of both attendees and staff—highlighting their connections, challenges, and the broader influence on the Black and elderly communities. It was essential that this piece not only captured moments but also reflected the heart of Carib Eats: resilience, generosity, and cultural preservation.
